AI - a friend or a foe!

February 27, 2018

With the recent developments in Artificial Intelligence domain and software tools, which is progressing at break neck speed, some people have had thoughts on whether AI is helping humans to progress, or will it one day rule over humans.

An incident that happened today morning, when I was using LinkedIn Messaging to chat my wife, has really got me thinking on how the future would be with AI. For so many centuries, man has struggled to understand how a woman thinks. But AI seems to make it easy ! I think it has finally cracked the code to understand "how a woman thinks!".. Just when my wife sent me a list of to do, AI in LinkedIn Messenger gave me a suggestion on how to reply to my wife's message and I just had to click "Okay, Sounds good" and my wife was so happy :) ! I could definitely use more AI, to reply appropriate message to my wife and keep her calm .

On a serious note, yes, AI has been a friend when needed, but at the same time can be a foe as a result of how some people can maliciously introduce code with an intent to cause damage to others. After all, it's how the AI has been programmed on a bot or a device or the training data it has been fed.

AI, recently has helped in various fields including analysing the Big bang theory, finding new planets, aiding in finding that a toothpaste ingredient can protect against malaria and even show how humans can come to a compromise that benefits all.

The biggest challenge facing us is how do we control the AI based devices and ensure AI does not mislead us into thinking differently ( by spreading false news or messages) and lead human race on a destructive path.

The onus lies on each software programmer and hardware provider on how to get an AI device on self-destruct mode, once they cross an human acceptable barrier.

I am interested to know and share more about your thoughts on this topic!
